Visiting Southwestern Vermont: A 3-Day Itinerary

Keep in mind that our innkeepers at the Arlington Inn are happy to provide you with detailed maps local insight to help you plan a personalized adventure!

Day One: Explore the Great Outdoors

Check into The Arlington Inn and get settled into your guest room or suite. After you unpack your bags, it’s time to start exploring! From hiking and biking to fishing and kayaking, there is no shortage of things to do in Southwestern Vermont. Get your adrenaline pumping with a hike along part of the Appalachian Trail, go trout fishing, or embark on a paddling adventure down the Battenkill River

To get better acquainted with the area, we recommend going for a drive along any of our scenic roads and byways. Along the way, you’ll pass pastoral landscapes, soaring mountains, sparkling lakes, and Southwestern Vermont’sthe Shire’s historic covered bridges. Named by Yankee Magazine as one of the most scenic drives in New England, you’ll want to add a drive along the Vermont Route 100 to your itinerary. No matter what time of year you visit, it’s a beautiful sight to behold. Make sure to bring your camera!

After a day of adventure, come home to The Arlington Inn and join us for dinner in our Dining Room. While reservations are not required, we strongly recommend doing so for us to better serve you. Then, head back to your comfortable guest room and get a great night’s rest!

Day Two: Dive into History

Wake up to a complimentary, cooked-to-order country breakfast at The Arlington Inn, complete with freshly-baked muffins, daily inspired omelets, pancakes, French toast, eggs cooked any style, applewood smoked bacon and homemade corned beef hash or country link sausage. After breakfast, get ready to discover Southwestern Vermont’s museums and historic sites. Visit Hildene, and take a guided tour of the Lincoln Family Home. This gorgeous Georgian revival mansion was once the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln and his wife, Mary Lincoln. Allow 3 to 6 hours to browse this 412-acre estate, which includes the home, several historic buildings, formal gardens, and observatory.

Next, enjoy lunch at Ponce Bistro in Manchester. One of our favorite Southwestern Vermont restaurants, it’s located inside a historic converted home. The menu features a range of tasty creations, including soups, salads, quiche, sandwiches, and more. Try to save room for dessert!  Spend the rest of the afternoon touring the Park-McCullough House, Bennington Museum, or the former home (now a museum) of the famous poet, Robert Frost.

End your day with a delicious dinner at the Arlington Inn and relax with an evening cocktail in our beautiful gardens.

Day Three: Experience Local Art and Shopping

Start your morning off right with a full country breakfast at The Arlington Inn. Then, begin your day with a trip to the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Take your time exploring the exhibits, which showcase the works of early 20th century artists. See paintings, etchings, sculptures, and much more. If you’d like to grow your own artistic skills, sign up for an educational workshop. There are a variety of hands-on classes to choose from at the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Learn how to paint with oils, watercolor, spray paint, ink, or oil and cold wax. Take a hand-spinning class, paint a local landscape, or create your own clay sculpture. You might even enjoy trying something more unique such as glass blowing at Manchester Hot gGlass !

In the afternoon, enjoy shopping in Southwestern Vermont. Find all the top brands at the Manchester Designer Outlets, attend a craft show, or purchase fresh produce at one of our local farmers markets. Are you looking for specialty gifts or souvenirs? Visit the Vermont Country Store for one-of-a-kind treasures for friends and family back home. And if you’d like to take home a bottle of pure Vermont maple syrup, head over to the Sugar Shack.
