The Top 6 Vermont Scenic Drives and Road Trips
Route 7 traverses the entire state, starting in Pownal and working its way up to Highgate Springs at the Canadian border. You’ll see some wacky roadside art, like the Boy and the Boot fountain in Wallingford. One of our favorites is Salisbury’s Gorilla Holding a VW Beetle. Nicknamed Queen Connie, she balances an actual VW Bug on her left arm. You have to see it to believe it!
Right off Route 7 in Southern Vermont is one of the most idyllic covered bridges in the state, the Chiselville Covered Bridge. Drive through this red, lattice-patterned bridge and over the Roaring Branch Brook, then hop out for an amazing photo.
The Molly Stark Byway
Also known as Route 9, the Molly Stark Byway starts in Brattleboro and continues west toward historic Bennington. If you’re visiting during autumn, you don’t want to miss the magnificent Vermont fall foliage that adorns this open road. Don’t skip the Molly Stark State Park, either. Stretch your legs and hike up to the fire tower atop Mt. Olga for a great view of the surrounding area.
The Lake Champlain Byway
Explore Vermont’s west coast for 185 miles of spectacular scenery, historic towns, and outdoor activities. Lake Champlain is the perfect destination for a day trip. Look out at the sparkling blue water, but don’t plan to spend all day in the car!
The Lake Champlain Valley has some of the best wineries in the state, so a stop along the Champlain Valley Wine Trail is a must. Check out this Chews and Brews Itinerary for a list of the best locally sourced food and drink along the byway.
The Green Mountain Byway
If you’re looking for breathtaking views of mountains, farmlands, waterfalls, and forests, this is the route for you! The Green Mountain Byway provides four-season recreation opportunities like mountain biking, hiking, and skiing. No matter the time of year, Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, is a can’t-miss attraction. For brave souls looking to add adventure to their trip, the 4,395-foot climb rewards hikers with inspiring views you’ll never forget.
The Route 100 Byway
The scenic Route 100 Byway has been recognized by Yankee Magazine as one of the most scenic drives in New England. This 146-mile route is part of the state’s “Skier’s Highway” and is a hub of outdoor recreation. It connects some of the best opportunities for snowboarding, golfing, and cycling in the state.
The road has plenty of cultural highlights as well. In particular, it is home to Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts, one of the oldest non-profit arts and crafts schools in the country.
